Glass Care 101: Keeping Your Pieces Clean and Lasting Longer
A simple, repeatable cleaning routine that keeps your glass tasting fresh and prevents the cracks and clogs that end a good piece early.
Why Cleaning Matters More Than the Piece You Bought
A neglected pipe tastes worse than a cheap clean one. Residue narrows airflow, holds stale water smell and traps heat where the glass is thinnest, which is exactly where pieces eventually crack. Ten minutes of maintenance a week protects both flavor and the piece itself.
The good news is that the routine is simple, cheap and identical for almost every piece we sell — no specialty product required.
The Weekly Routine
Empty the water, add isopropyl alcohol and a spoonful of coarse salt, plug the openings, and shake for a minute or two. The salt does the scrubbing, the alcohol dissolves the resin. Rinse thoroughly with warm — never boiling — water and let it air dry upright.
Soak removable parts separately: downstems, bowls, ash catchers and screens all clog faster than the body of the piece. A pipe cleaner or cotton swab handles the joints where shaking can't reach.
Habits That Make Glass Last
Change your water every session — stale water is the single biggest cause of harsh, off-tasting pulls. Avoid sudden temperature swings, since thermal shock breaks more glass than drops do. And keep the piece on a silicone mat or in a padded stand rather than balanced on a table edge.
